Why is the “American education sucks” meme so persistent?

I read the USA ball’s comments in a very rough six-pack-a-day-habit dude’s voice. It worked well.

Because American education does suck. I moved from Estonia to the US now a couple of decades ago. Went to 7th grade when I moved here. For the first 2-3 years of school here, everyting in maths and sciences that I learned here, I had already learned in Estonia prior. Now, looking at the kind of stuff my kids are learning in school, as far as history or geography and that kind of stuff goes, is also very limited compared to what I learned in Estonia. I mean they are still sending home maps with USSR on them. I called the teacher out on that, in front of other parents.. my son did not get fair treatment in that class afterwards... Anyways, seeing what my kids learned up through middle school in the US, and what I learned in high school here, there are things about history and chemistry and whatnot, that the US schools just don’t teach kids. In a word, it does suck compared to at least what they taught us in the 80s and 90s in Estonia.

I’ve spoken to many Americans over the years from Washington State, North Carolina, Florida, Utah, etc... and all have said they don’t do much in geography, history is limited, world affairs almost non existent, etc...

Most have said how insular the U.S. is.

Soviet education better than American education.

Yeah, I don’t believe you.

Education was more rigorous during the Soviet era on the wrong side of the Iron Curtain.

Moving from the US to Belgium was a shock for our family. The work they expected kids in 2nd and 4th grade to complete here compared to the US was far, far more advanced.

Because a lot of it does. It varies widly from state to state as some are more concerned with funding both K-12 education as well as college education, while others have stripped tens of millions from those programs like in Kansas.

It’s gotten so bad there that the courts have had to intervene on multiple occassions to get Kansas to properly fund their school system as they’re failing to live up to the non-discriminatory nature of public schooling.

It’s a real shit show, and while American Universities are well regarded, it’s still a mess depending on the state and how much they subsidize the cost.

Thank you, Texas. Your inbred government officials are buttfucking the nation over by insisting your masive book orders be for bland, whitewashed, Mission-accomplished, my-country-tis-of-thee, jingoistic BULLSHIT textbooks means you get to decide what most states use. THus rendering mot of the nation as stupid unless you’re privileged enough to be born to parents who have the means and ability to give a shit. BUT YEEHAW SMALL GUBMENT AND OIL MONEY WILL GRANT US FREEDUMS FUREVER!

Suit yourself. I can tell you from experience that the Soviets put much more emphases on the maths and sciences than the US, though yes, obviously the history and literature and whatnot, was full of national propaganda (similar to the US or any large nation). After Estonia became free from Soviet occupation once again, the material obviously changed from the Soviet-centric to a more neutral stance, but the overall rigorousness and dedication level that’s expected of the kids didn’t change too much, as it was already very similar to the rest of Europe.

The US is not unlike any other large nation in the sense of isolationism and national propaganda. Not wanting to draw unjust parallels to the USSR here nescesarily, the US education system (and media for that matter) does lack in current world affairs, geography, history, and other such subjects that would broaden the world view and understanding of the kids, and what they do teach is very US-centric (US biased if you will). I can’t say I nescesarly blame the US for the that as it seems inevitable in any large nation. I’m just constantly taken aback, coming from a small country, where if we only focused on the Estonian internal history and politics, you’d be graduating after 8th grade, so a much heavier focus is put on the world overall. I just think there needs to be a balance.

Yes, because if the Soviets taught their people anything about humanities, they would have revolted sooner.

You tankies and your rose-colored glasses.

I suppose me being British, us Brits and Europeans have a massive amount of history shared amongst each other both good and bad that extends around the world (hell I can link my own city to many countries around the world). We are a dense group of nations and one nation has a knock on effect throughout the whole group so we’re brought up from an early age to look further afield.

I’m not arguing with you about that. The Soviet propaganda machine definetly helped hold the people down. And I don’t want you to think for a minute that I support what the USSR stood for. Being an Estonian, I hate them and everything they did to destroy Estonian culture and country with a passion. All I’m saying is that the US educational system has some room for growth.
